She Did the Math

This evening I told Malia that it would just be the two of us home tomorrow morning. She asked where Kevin, Matthew and Nathan would be, and I explained their various morning adventures. Then she said, “And Daniel’s still on his mission. Tomorrow it will be day four. That means he will have 726 days left.”

I’m equal parts proud of her mad math skills and touched at how much he is in her mind. She put a note to him in today’s mail. I’m the mom and if I’m not careful, she’s going to make me look bad. Guess I’d better get my act together and get something ready to send. It should probably be some taco seasoning packets. As we’ve talked about simple meals Daniel can cook, he asked about the spices we use to season tacos. I make my own taco seasoning because not only is it much cheaper, but taco seasoning often has milk in it which doesn’t work for Matthew. My kiddo, who has grown up in a “cooked from scratch” household, is about to get a crash course in prepared foods.😜

F(X)=X2(X+1)(X-8)

My boys are good at math. They get asked for help all the time. It comes so easily to them that we have to remind them fairly regularly that math is really hard for most people. There are people who just can’t wrap their brains around it and honestly don’t understand it. Math just makes so much sense to my boys that it is difficult for them to comprehend that lack of understanding. Daniel thinks calculus is fun and Nathan loves physics, which is all about the math. And Matthew is going to be starting 7th grade in the 8th grade honors math class. So yeah, they are good at math.

Recently, Daniel had a classmate ask him for help with calculus. He scheduled his tutoring session on the calendar as a “party.” 😂

Opera d'Arithmetique

Nathan loves music. He is one of the few five-year-olds I know that not only knows what opera is, but likes it. He sings all the time, very frequently serenading us with songs he has made up himself. So today's entertainment was not completely unprecedented, but it did contain a very different subject matter.

I never knew there was so much art to be found in addition flash cards. Once he noticed me recording him he got a touch of stage fright, but once the camera was off he was singing all over again.
