My Budding Comedian

This morning I was cleaning off my desk, a task I generally undertake when the pile of junk starts to interfere with my view of the computer screen. On the bottom I found a stack of papers I brought home from parent/teacher conferences in November. I had left it there because there was a story in Matthew’s school journal that made me laugh. It had Matthew’s personality written all over it. So I scanned it. Hope it makes you chuckle.

I think my favorite part is, “Aaaaaaaaaa!” :-)

Matthew is, and has always been, a funny kid. He grasped the subtleties of humor at a very early age. In fact, he could understand and use humor and sarcasm before Nathan could and Nathan is nearly four years older than Matthew. He can make people laugh, even though half the time that is not his intention. But I’m grateful for it. I think we all need a bit more humor in our lives.

Apparently I've Succeeded in Instilling a Love of Books in my Children

When we moved Malia from the crib to her big girl bed in August, she adjusted very quickly. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that there are built in bookshelves covering the wall at the head of the bed and she could stay in her bed like we instructed and still keep herself entertained. When I check on her before I go to bed at night I usually have to pull a few books out of her bed, sometimes from underneath her head because she has fallen asleep right on an open book.

Last night I found her fast asleep with at least two dozen books and two flashlights, one of which was still on. It would appear that she’s learned the flashlight under the covers trick early…but at least she loves books.

The Big 4-0

Well, today’s the day. I am officially in my 40’s. That sounds weird to say, probably because I’ve been saying that I’m in my 30’s for the past decade. Besides that, I’m okay with the number. I’m not having a sudden mid-life crisis because I’ve realized I’m now officially middle aged. However, if I decide I want to have one later, I reserve the right to do so. In fact, I probably need to shake things up a little so perhaps I should start planning my crisis now…I’m sure most people don’t plan their mid-life crises in advance, but even four decades of living have not been able to shake the OCD out of me.

While being 40 may not weird me out, having a child who is very nearly as tall as I am does weird me out. My children are indisputable proof of the passage of time.

Mama Drama

I just called out beloved neighborhood preschool teacher to register Malia for preschool in the fall. It kind of freaks me out because she isn’t even two and a half yet. But by the fall she will be three (just barely) and a couple of years of preschool will help us know if she is ready to start kindergarten when she is four (which happens for really young kids in year round school) or if she needs another year. I suspect she’ll be ready for kindergarten but I can’t say for sure.

I feel like she isn’t old enough for me to even be thinking about school yet, but I guess this is how it works for kids who have birthdays at the end of August. If she had waited to be born at the right time, I would have a whole ‘nother year until I had to face thoughts of school…of course, it’s way too late to do anything about that now. In fact, it was way too late about half a second after she decided she didn’t want a September birthday.

Sing, Wiggle, Repeat

I just got a new(ish) calling. Once again I will be a primary chorister. It’s good thing this is a calling that doesn’t freak me out or make me feel completely overwhelmed because I’m still the choir director too…guess it’s time to dust off the file boxes and pull out the wiggle worms.
