Bunnies for Breakfast

This past week has been a really hard headache week. That coupled with the fact that my kids had no great desire to color eggs or anything means that Easter festivities around here have been at a bare minimum. And what is that minimum? Pancakes, of course!

I happened across a bunny shaped Peeps pancake pan months ago, about five minutes after Christmas when all the Easter candy showed up in the stores. Our favorite pancake recipe paired with some food coloring led to super simple bunnies for breakfast. At least, they were mostly simple. There was a learning curve with the Peeps pan and we ended up with a roadkill bunny. But Matthew has a tough stomach and ate the roadkill with gusty. And not surprisingly, it tasted just like every other bunny pancake. 😉 Subsequent bunnies were better formed although the dark finish on the pan meant darker color on the pancakes which tended to mask the cute colors. But the pastel insides were cute and delicious!

The very last bunny of the bunch was a technicolor bunny. The last time we had a technicolor bunny at our house was on an off-track craft day in 2010 and was a creation of Matthew’s. That one was cuter than today’s bunny, although the pancake version definitely tasted superior! 

She’s a Big Girl Now!

Ok, so technically Malia has been a big girl for a while now. In fact, I think she might be a tiny bit taller than me. But I cheated for our family pictures in December and wore heels, so it looks like I’m still noticeably taller than she is. Basically, what I’m saying is that my tween is no longer little. If she wanted to, she could probably steal my clothes…but our styles are very different, so I don’t think there’s any danger of that happening. 😂

A few years back when Malia brought up the topic of pierced ears, Kevin and I told her it was a middle school thing. She was actually fine with that since at the time the idea of sticking something sharp through her ears was not all that appealing. But with a few years and three-fourths of seventh grade behind her, Malia revisited the pierced ears idea and decided she was ready. And since her timing is well in accordance with our “middle school” decree and the kids have spring break this week, Malia decided today was the day. So, we drove through the driving snow (perfect spring break weather, right? 😜) and got her ears pierced. 

Cute, right? And I mean the girl, not the earrings. 😉 Said cute girl is currently browsing Amazon for “fun earrings.”

Happy Little Dino-Cakes

A few days ago, Matthew came to me with a pancake proposal. The proposal was as follows: on Wednesday (today) when Matthew had only half a day of school because he would be taking the ACT in the morning, could we make pancakes for lunch. Matthew then proceeded to show me what the proposed pancakes should look like. I responded with a counter proposal: making the afore-mentioned pancakes for dinner so Malia could partake as well. The counter proposal was accepted and thus a plan was born. 

This evening, I was in charge of pancakes and Matthew headed up the decorating committee. The end result was tasty and so, so cute! 

I could not be more pleased that my penchant for fun pancakes has rubbed off on my offspring. 😊

Comfort Zone

Malia is in choir this semester and it has ended up being one of her favorite classes. This evening was her first ever choir concert and while she was nervous, I also think she was excited. She stepped out of her comfort zone and into some nice slacks and a blouse instead of her normal jeans and a hoodie and she looked fantastic. Between the time that we left her and the time she showed up on stage, one of her friends pulled her hair back with a clip and that looked good too. Malia isn’t much concerned with things like that, normally just brushing it out and calling it good, but she has fantastic hair, and it doesn’t surprise me that the other girls want to play with it. It is a totally normal teenage girl kind of a thing. And maybe some of their hair knowledge will give Malia some ideas of simple ways to style her hair. 

Malia doesn’t like being the center of attention and a large part of her nervousness was the fact that she knew hundreds of people would be watching her. But once again she stepped out of her comfort zone. She did a great job and discovered that under the stage lights, you can’t actually see all that much of the audience. She still needs to learn to focus on the director all the time, but that is one of those things that takes practice too. She has only been in choir for about six weeks, so there is plenty of time for her to learn some of these choir etiquette things. She has also chosen concert choir as one of her electives for next year, so she will have lots of opportunities to learn and progress and grow and find joy in music. 

And as for the one song she sang that she absolutely hates, it really was one of the dumbest songs I’ve heard in a long, long time. She has my full support in disliking it.
