She’s Getting Her Kicks

For the past few months, Malia has been wanting to play soccer. We missed the deadline for spring soccer at the rec center so when the flyer for summer soccer showed up, we decided we’d let her give it a try. At the very beginning she kind of hung back because she had never played before and had no idea what she was doing, but by the end of the six-game series, she was in the thick of things. In fact, her team won their last game and Malia scored two of their goals. She has enjoyed it and wants to continue to play, but she has decided summer is not her favorite time for soccer because it is too hot. I have to agree with that. Temperatures have been in the high 90’s and that’s not exactly conducive to health and wellbeing for me, so I didn’t get to see any of her games. If she plays in cooler weather, I’ll be able to watch.

Futball

Matthew has not played organized sports for a while. He used to be all about football, but that waned after a bit and over the past year or so his interests have diversified. He has tried volleyball (a set of beginning techniques class as well as a round of tournament style games) and really enjoyed that. He would really like to try fencing but the beginners class that both Daniel and Nathan did has not been offered for quite some time. This fall he decided he wanted to give soccer a try. I think he really enjoyed himself. He loves to be active and outside and soccer filled both those needs. He said he would be interested in playing soccer again.

Soccer Mom

Nathan has been playing soccer this summer and fall and after a couple of months, he is starting to get the hang of things. He is a lot less aggressive than some of the other kids, which means he prefers defensive positions. But he'll stand back, guard the box, and be ready to stop the ball when it comes his way. Here he is doing his stuff (look closely and you'll see that he has a tendency to stick his tongue out when he is concentrating).




On of the fun things about doing rec sports is that every kid gets a trophy at the end. As always, Nathan felt like a winner!
