Jazzy Jammin’

Last night, Matthew and Daniel slipped out after pie day at my mom’s house and headed up to Park City. Destination? Wednesday night sit in at the jazz club! Matthew had a great time when he played last month, and he was super excited about the opportunity to have Daniel accompany him for another evening of music. When he called Daniel to see if he wanted to go, Matthew asked Daniel if he wanted to go bar hopping with him. We all laughed super hard at Daniel’s complete confusion, but once he understood what the deal was, he was completely on board with the plan. It just so happened that one of the other players who was there last night was on the woodwind staff when Daniel was in high school. So, he got to play and catch up a bit with an old instructor which was fun.

While neither of my boys did any imbibing of spirits, I can honestly say their bar hopping evening was a success!

Sittin’ in with the Band

Matthew had a fun opportunity this evening. His band teacher, who is a percussionist, spends Wednesday evenings jamming with the band at a jazz club in Park City. It is really just a bar with live music, but it is one of those situations where whoever happens to show up is welcome to play with the band. His teacher invited Matthew to come play this evening, so Kevin and Matthew drove up the canyon to check things out. Matthew had a grand time. Not only did he get to jump in and sightread a bunch of tunes from the jazz charts, which provide a melody and chords and leave the rest up to the musicians, but he got some serious encouragement and some great tips from another of the players, who happens to be the band teacher at another high school and whose main instrument is trumpet. Matthew has been craving some of those finer tips and has been trying to find a private teacher to get some of them, so it was a highlight for him. Matthew had a great time and has already expressed interest in going again.
