Good Hair Day

My mind has been so preoccupied with the pandemic and all the associated stresses and anxieties that it didn’t occur to me that Malia and I haven’t had a trim for nearly a year until I looked in the mirror last week and realized that my hair has gotten really long. Our usual hairstylist has had a rough year. She has had both knees replaced this year, had allergic reactions to several pain medications, and heart surgery. And the first heart surgery didn’t go just as it should have so she had another one this month. As a result, I didn’t feel like I should call her to try to set up an appointment with her right now. So Malia and I headed to a local salon to get our locks tidied up. My hair is totally straight so I honestly have no idea what to do with Malia’s waves, but our hair stylist took a few minutes to educate us a bit on how to deal with curly hair and the results were fantastic. Malia loves it and wants to do it again! I’m going to have to get some hair condiments and teach her how to style it herself when she’s a bit older. Right now she wants fast and easy, which usually means a ponytail, but I have a feeling that as she gets a bit older, she’s going to want to take advantage of her hair’s fabulous natural tendencies.

 

 

A Hair Affair

Malia and I had haircuts yesterday. Last time Malia had a haircut, the hair on the sides of her head was still only shoulder length even though the back was getting pretty long. So we evened out the ends and shaped her hair in a U so we wouldn’t need to cut it super short. Since then, her hair has grown long enough that we could just cut it all the same length. I think it looks nicer now that everything is all evened out. And because there is less length, her nature waves are a bit more prominent. It also makes her look older which I’m not sure I’m ready for. But mommy desires aside, time marches on.

 Can you tell whose hair is whose? It's kind of a no brainer. ;-)

Do you remember my rant about hair elastics last year? The subject came us as we were getting the locks clipped and our wonderful hairdresser suggested we check out Sally Beauty Supply. We did so as soon as we were finished and it looks like I've found some elastics that won't make me Mormon swear every time I comb Malia's hair. They didn't have any of the normal big box brands (thankfully) and it looks like I'll be a repeat customer.

Snip Snip

Today was the first haircut day ever for Malia. She loves her hair long (Rapunzel is her favorite after all) so she made sure tell everyone that she was just getting a little trim. And that's really all she needed. As she has never had a haircut before, the ends were pretty uneven. So we just evened things up a bit.

She wasn't nervous at all and she did a great job sitting still although she did get bored near the end.
