Muppet Killer

Having Halloween fall on a Friday is always fun. Because not only is there no school tomorrow and no need to drag sugar coma inflicted children out of bed in order to get them to school (although we really don’t need to do that anymore, which is nice), but it is pancake day! And having time for Halloween pancakes on actual Halloween is great! So, I had a pancake plan, a plan that involved lychee and blueberry eyeballs casually dropped on top of some lime green pancakes all draped with a bloody lychee syrup. It was a good plan, a tasty one, but there was a very unfortunate, and completely unexpected, outcome. When I assembled my first pancake stack, it looked exactly like Kermit the frog. Except bloody. 🤦

Killing Kermit was not exactly on my to-do list for today, but sometimes our days don’t go as expected. 🤣

She’s Loving the Public-School Transit!

Malia has settled into school and now that she can actually get to all her classes without getting lost, she is feeling much more confident. One of the unexpected highlights of her school days are the bus rides to and from school. Not only does she get to talk with her friends during transit, but she really likes her bus driver. He is funny and nice and contributes to the entertainment value of her travel time. His name is Curtis and since we are Muppet fans over here, on the very first day her brain linked Curtis with Kermit the frog and she has taken to calling him Kermit.

Malia enjoys making gifts for people that she likes, so she has crafted a tiny Kermit keychain out of clay to give to her bus driver, who displays other such gifts from the kids in the front of the bus. Her mini-Kermit is even wearing a baseball cap like her bus driver. Her artistic skills always astound me as I can neither draw nor sculp, and I love that she gets such enjoyment out of sharing her talents with others!

Almost Free, But Not Quite

Kev wanted to have a family play day on his birthday and since National Free Fishing Day happened to coincide with his day of celebration and there just happens to be a regularly stocked fishing pond five minutes from our house, we (And by "we" I mean Kev; I just took the pictures and made sure Matthew didn't jump in the pond.) took the boys fishing. This was their maiden voyage as sportsmen and they both loved it in spite of the fact that all they caught were grass fish.


Nathan got surprisingly good at casting off in a surprisingly short amount of time. There were a few tangled lines to deal with, but nothing to put a damper on the fun.


It was an absolutely perfect day for outdoor activities: clear blue skies, not too hot, blissful weather. Our view from the pond was fabulous.


After fishing and lunch, Kev used birthday money from his mom to take us all to a movie. We saw "Up" and it was okay. Definitely not my favorite Pixar film, but at least I didn't come away feeling like I had completely wasted two hours of my life. And the boys enjoyed it, of course. Total cost for our family fun day was live bait and two cheap fishing poles. An excellent price for a day well spent.

Muppet Love

Matthew has a new best friend. In addition to his "My-ie," (that's blankie for those of you who don't speak Matthewese) Matthew has become emotionally attached to Kermit the frog. According to Matthew, "Mermit" says, "Bubbit! Bubbit!"
